Clothes are not only pieces of fabric that dress or adorn humans, they are also a reflection of the society in which we live. While for centuries, clothing made it possible to identify above all the profession or social position of those who wore it, their individualization appeared hand in hand with the increasing permeability of society. Clothing has since served much more than just providing protection and warmth: it must also express its owners' own personality and individual preferences.
Fashion ensures a constant renewal of clothing, but also reflects political, economic and social changes. In this context, it can for example be the expression of an adaptation or a rebellion, signal a social upheaval or on the contrary a persistence in conventions. But individualized clothing is also standardized and most often expresses the desire to belong to a certain group and to be accepted by it.
Through this exhibition, the Photothèque focuses on aspects of fashion in Luxembourg since the beginning of the 20th century. Professional clothing and toiletries intended for certain occasions contrast with the casual outfits of young people in the 1970s. At the beginning of the 20th century, women and men from the bourgeoisie had their portraits taken and also demonstrated their lifestyle, rather high-end, through their clothing. The numerous fashion shows that have taken place in Luxembourg City show that fashion is also linked to the quest for a certain form of beauty. A glance at the city's traditional window displays and stores invites visitors to stroll. Fashion is ephemeral, but the desire for every individual to position themselves in their social context persists through the centuries.
