"The Elegance of the Molecule" by Petr Zelenka, one of the Czech Republic’s most accomplished contemporary playwrights, examines the complex figure of Professor Antonín Holý, the Czech chemistry genius known as one of the fathers of the AIDS drug used by over eighty percent of patients worldwide. The journey from drug conception to its availability on pharmacy shelves is uncertain, lengthy, costly, and requires the labor of thousands. The play tells the story of three substances and their three "fathers," Antonín Holý, Belgian doctor Erik de Clercq, and prominent scientific chemist John C. Martin. This work delves into the creation and dramatically industrial evolution of substances from Czech chemical laboratories, blending documentary elements with fiction and infusing scientific facts with humor. THE PLAY WON A THEATRE CRITICS’ AWARD IN 2018 AS THE BEST NEW CZECH PLAY OF THE YEAR. With English subtitles.
