The conference celebrates five decades of EU consumer law, bringing together leading academics, judges, and policy-makers to critically reflect on its evolution and future direction. Its objective is to review the development of this legal field and propose a constructive approach to address today’s challenges: fostering a balanced procedural regime, ensuring effectiveness, adopting digitalization, and reconciling consumer and environmental protection. The event commences with opening addresses by key institutional and academic figures, followed by discussions about the historical and ideological roots of consumer law, judicial dialogue between the Court of Justice and national courts, and the role of enforcement mechanisms in ensuring effective cross-border protection. Sessions also discuss the impact of digitalization and the ties between consumer and environmental protection. The conference concludes with a forward-looking reflection on the evolution of this field in response to emerging societal and technological transformations.
