Japan's Golden Age of Cinema
By the 1950s, Japanese society endeavored to recover from war and transition to modernization. The era's tensions between tradition and modernity raised fundamental questions, from women's roles to the essence of being Japanese in a changing society. Yasujiro Ozu mastered contemporary domestic dramas exploring these themes, while Kenji Mizoguchi's lyrical historical narratives reflected similar issues in a different and freer context. Keisuke Kinoshita's comedic yet serious approach also addressed these matters.
