In a musical adaptation by Karin Ospelt and Thomas Spieckermann.
Young Karlos loves Elisabeth and she loves him, but his father marries his fiancée. Karlos cannot overcome this blow. Elisabeth accepts her unhappy marriage. This family tragedy becomes a state crisis because Karlos is not only a young man but also heir to the Spanish throne.
King Philip rules over the largest empire ever and seeks to secure it through his marriage to Elisabeth of Valois. Yet, many challenges arise: a revolt in the Netherlands against Spanish rule, the Emperor in Vienna seeks to expand his empire, and the Turks threaten Europe. Philip stands firm against his opponents.
Marquis Posa, Karlos' childhood friend, one day asks him to go to the Netherlands, away from court, but Karlos cannot leave Elisabeth. Posa does not give up and demands freedom of thought from King Philip.
Friedrich Schiller’s "Don Karlos" is considered one of the greatest works of world theatre and a prime example of an idea-driven drama that remains relevant. After the successful staging of Brecht's "Leben des Galilei," Oliver Vorwerk returns to TNL with this new co-production.
