In a musical adaptation by Karin Ospelt and Thomas Spieckermann.
Young Karlos loves Elisabeth, and she loves him, but then his father marries Karlos’s fiancée. Karlos cannot recover from this blow, while Elisabeth accepts her unhappy marriage. This family tragedy turns into a state crisis, as Karlos is not just a young man but the heir to the Spanish throne. King Philip rules over the largest empire of the time and seeks to secure it through his marriage to Elisabeth of Valois. However, there are immense challenges: revolt in the Netherlands, the Emperor in Vienna wanting to expand his empire, and the Turks laying siege to the West. Philip governs with an iron hand.
One day, Marquis Posa, a childhood friend of Karlos, returns to the Spanish court and asks Karlos to go with him to the Netherlands. But Karlos cannot bring himself to leave Elisabeth. Posa insists and demands freedom of thought from King Philip.
Friedrich Schiller’s drama "Don Karlos" is considered one of the greatest theatrical pieces of world literature, a shining example of an "Ideendrama" that has lost none of its relevance. Realpolitik versus political utopia: two figures represent opposing positions while sharing the same fundamental ground. This thought world seems to be increasingly abandoned by today’s politics.
After the successful production of Brecht’s "Life of Galileo," directed by Oliver Vorwerk, this new co-production returns to TNL.
