João Canijo : Close to the Bone
Lauded Portuguese director João Canijo, known for his uncompromising, socially engaged cinema, passed away in January, leaving behind a legacy of films that delve deeply into the human condition. His latest completed works, Bad Living and Living Bad, are companion pieces set within the same family-run hotel, where the claustrophobic space amplifies generational tensions and moral reckonings. Canijo carefully foregrounds the complexities of womanhood – care, resentment, solidarity, and inheritance – immersing viewers in an intimate world of conflict and emotional vulnerability.
