Apparition is the first part of a diptych inspired by Gustav Mahler’s masterpiece Kindertotenlieder, freely adapted by the composer Franck Krawczyk for a choir of twelve children with piano accompaniment and a sound track. Kindertotenlieder takes the enigma of childhood to an incandescent culmination, the death of children embodying the loss of this intuition that in principle constitutes our relationship with the world. Apparition gives children a voice in a sound landscape consisting of noises from nature and animals. Mahler’s songs accompanied with the piano will be performed by a local children’s choir alongside other music, such as a Moravian melody by Leoš Janáček and a revolutionary song by Hanns Eisler.
