The Revival - Ghana: The landfill of fast fashion
An immersive exhibition on textile waste in Ghana and the link with overconsumption in the West.
Our clothes do not disappear from the face of the earth when we throw them away; they often travel as far as West Africa, with considerable impacts. “The Revival”, a Ghanaian citizen organization, in collaboration with Caritas Luxembourg, will shed light on this reality in Esch from February 1 – May 11, 2024 thanks to the support of the City of Esch.
Ghana has become a global fast fashion dustbin. Every day, 160 tonnes of textile waste land there, the equivalent of 800 million pieces of clothing. Ghana is home to the Kantamanto Market in Accra (the capital), with 30,000 traders and is one of the largest second-hand markets in the world. Ghana is drowning in tons of clothing from Western countries and Asia, causing environmental damage and impoverishing the Ghanaian population. Ghana finds itself having to manage a problem for which it is not responsible, this is not a sustainable situation.
