When Karl, Klara, and Friedrich's mother has to go to the hospital, the three children move in with their grandfather for an indefinite period. Grandpa Bert is a poet. He has little money and many unpaid bills. When the youth welfare office tries to take his children away, Grandpa Bert takes his last pennies and runs away. And everyone follows him. The impossible becomes possible. Nothing stays the same. The world is turned upside down and, in amazement, turns a little the other way. The Threepenny Grandpa is a touching and wondrous story about poverty, wealth, and the power of poetry.
