Departure of the Prussian Garrison: What Identity for the City?
Unlike the inhabitants of other fortified cities, Luxembourgers had not requested the departure of the Prussian garrison. With the Treaty of May 11, 1867, ending the fortress, both the capital and the country faced enormous challenges. What identity and future could be reserved for a city without a harbor, natural resources, or a substantial population base, especially in the context of a Franco-German war? The tour highlights the transformation of the fortress city into a national capital, as the seat of political and economic power.
