“The Reader” by Bernhard Schlink. A theatrical adaptation by Myriam Neidhart. A key literary work of the 20th century. In the late 1950s, 15-year-old Michael meets 36-year-old Hanna. He becomes her reader and she becomes a pivotal figure for him, until she unexpectedly disappears. Seven years later, while attending a war criminal trial as a law student, Michael identifies Hanna among the defendants. Realizing she is illiterate and could not have committed some accusations, he nonetheless chooses silence and refrains from intervening.
