Gardens & Crimes - Cinematic Gardens and the Subconscious
Throughout the history of cinema, gardens, parks, courtyards, and other green spaces have played roles far beyond mere backdrops. These places often reflect desires, anxieties, and fantasies, where meaning is sought—whether as peaceful sanctuaries or labyrinths shrouded in mystery. They also illustrate the duality between natural spaces shaped by man and those left untouched, highlighting the tension between order and chaos.
Aimed at both film buffs and garden enthusiasts, this series explores the role and symbolism of cinematic gardens through four lectures: Gardens and Power, Gardens and Love, Gardens and Crime, and Gardens and the Gothic.
Part Three: Gardens and Crimes (13/06)
From classics to modern thrillers, gardens and parks have served as settings for immoral acts, sinister discoveries, deaths, and espionage. By transforming violent acts into seemingly peaceful settings, these films reinforce the contrast between apparent tranquility and hidden threats.
