Ahmed Abdul-Malik was an oudist, bassist, educator, and philosopher. Having passed away in 1993, he held New York, the East, Africa, and jazz close to his heart. Companion to Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, and Randy Weston, Abdul-Malik crafted, through a handful of unique albums, an innovative vision for 20th-century jazz, notably as one of the first to introduce the oud. The quartet أحمد [Ahmed], whose album released in 2024, Giant Beauty, was hailed as album of the year by specialized magazines The Wire and Jazzwise, reworked his music to create a new imagination filled with captivating, syncopated sounds, where ruptures powerfully clash with loops of strong hypnotic appeal.
