Walter Benjamin introduced the concept of the "aura" of a work of art. There is something very special about a work of art that can keep the viewer's attention awake. Much earlier, JG Fichte had already wondered why certain works, for example certain books, are put away after the first 20 pages, while others captivate you so much that you have to read them all night. Here too, a similar concept is at play; in addition to the aura, we are concerned with the "spirit" that is conveyed in art. The role of the artist is a demanding one in both cases: it is his role to communicate something to the viewer, to make his idea accessible to the public and to do this through aesthetic contemplation. Can only geniuses achieve this? And how do they go about it? Is it only the spirit that counts, or do the senses and the body, the creative hands, play an equally important role? The contemporary philosopher John Dewey, on the other hand, is very certain: art is above all life, and elitist museums prevent a true art experience. What does he mean by that? And how does the art of photography relate to this? With the Luxembourgish photographers Jan Schwarz, Liz Lambert and Marc Wilwert, we encounter the photograph as a work of art.
