Every Wednesday, Pierre Brochant and his friends host a 'Dinner for Schmucks.' The concept is simple: each participant brings a 'fool,' and the one whose guest stands out the most is declared the winner. Tonight, Pierre is excited; he believes he has found a gem: François Pignon, an accountant at the Ministry of Finance, passionate about matchstick models. However, Pierre doesn't know that Pignon, always eager to lend a hand, is an expert in causing unforeseen disasters. This is the encounter of two fates that never should have crossed.
