Midsummer night on a Swedish estate, festivities take place in the kitchen. Julie, the wealthy daughter of the estate owner, develops an interest in her servant Jean. Julie and Jean flirt in the presence of the sleeping cook Kristin, who intends to marry Jean someday, and eventually find themselves together in his chamber. Julie longs for escape. Jean dreams of social mobility. As dawn approaches, roles blur, and the festive night gives way to conflict. Joint future plans shatter, and tensions erupt between genders, classes, and lifestyles, leading towards an abyss.
