Miss Julie - Theatre
Midsummer on a Swedish estate, a celebration takes place in the kitchen. Julie, the wealthy daughter of the estate owner, has her eyes set on her servant Jean. Julie and Jean flirt in the presence of the sleeping cook Kristin, who anticipates one day marrying Jean, and ultimately find themselves together in his chamber. Julie yearns for liberation, while Jean dreams of social ascension. As dawn approaches, boundaries blur; the effervescent night is followed by a hangover. Their shared future plans crumble, and a fierce conflict ensues between man and woman, between different classes and life visions, heading inevitably toward disaster. August Strindberg's 1888 naturalist tragedy "Miss Julie" remains his most performed and radical play. Presented by TNL in collaboration with Schauspiel Wuppertal and director Stefan Maurer, this production continues their fruitful work after "Stella."
