In collaboration with actress Veronika Bachfischer, playwright Elisa Leroy, and actress Suzanne de Baecque, Sarah Kohm adapted Annie Ernaux's novel Mémoire de fille (Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022) into an intense monologue.
In this novel, Annie Ernaux, who was 76 when the book was published, recounts a traumatic moment from her adolescence. At 17, she spent a summer working at a summer camp on the coast, far from her parents' enclave. She had a violent sexual encounter with her supervisor, which the young woman described as a passionate love affair. This was followed by mockery, humiliation, and abuse that caused her to suffer for years from menstrual irregularities and eating disorders. It was only much later that she recognized these events for what they truly were: experiences of sexual and verbal violence.
Girlhood is an intimate and moving quest that explores the profound link between female desire and the patriarchal subordination of women's bodies. Taking as its starting point the audience's gaze upon an actress's body, the performance raises the question of the possibility of language and narrative for female desire beyond the male gaze. For without this necessary deconstruction, isn't Annie's story doomed to repeat itself from generation to generation?
