Since the very beginnings of cinema, the sun has played a central role on screen. As the primary source of light, it shapes cinematic time, drives storytelling, and carries multiple meanings: sunrise symbolizes hope and renewal, while sunset evokes melancholy or the end of a cycle.

This conference explores how filmmakers have transformed the sun into a true narrative and symbolic tool. From the transcendent light of Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven, The Tree of Life) to the apocalyptic visions of Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner 2049, via Kurosawa, Coppola, and Tarkovsky, the sun becomes by turns spiritual illumination, hostile force, or witness to a world in transformation.

Through iconic film excerpts, the conference will reveal how this celestial body - whether omnipresent or deliberately absent-remains one of the most powerful and versatile motifs in the history of cinema.
