The exhibition Self-Portraits, Other Portraits presents a selection of photographs by Agnès Varda, revealing the richness and beauty of her work.
A more personal area of her oeuvre, photography is how Agnès Varda entered the art world. Throughout her artistic journey, her view as a photographer operated with playfulness, curiosity, and depth.
Her close friends, family, neighbors, and artists are among her chosen models, but she does not neglect strangers she encountered during her travels and strolls. Agnès Varda’s portraits demonstrate her desire to capture moments where an exchange with the other is at the heart of the image.
Agnès Varda did not limit herself to photographing others. Her self-portraits offer an original look at herself. Through plays of light, reflections, and transformations, she explores her own image, interacts with her body, and observes its evolution over the years. Since the late 1940s, people have animated Agnès Varda’s work; each photo then becomes the story of an encounter.
