On 2 February, the eve of St Blaise’s Day, children in Luxembourg celebrate “Liichtmëssdag”. Carrying lanterns or “Liichtebengelcher”, they go from door to door singing the traditional song “Léiw er Härgottsblieschen” and receive sweets or money in return. Although the custom dates back to pre-Christian times, it is now linked to Saint Blaise, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The lantern procession symbolizes Christ as the light of the world bringing light into darkness.
