Gardening has a long tradition in Luxembourg, and with it, garden literature that has accompanied and inspired generations of gardening enthusiasts. For decades, garden calendars and practical guides not only provided valuable advice on vegetable and fruit growing in small gardens but also conveyed essential knowledge on food preservation. Especially in times of crisis or shortage, such as during World War I, this knowledge became an indispensable resource for food security. It is therefore not surprising that the first Luxembourgish garden guide by Jean-Nicolas Peffer was published right after the war, as the importance of home gardening became clear to many during the war years.

In the years following the war, gardening associations and their publications also gained in significance. Besides private small gardens, workers’ gardens played an important social and economic role by offering many families an additional food source. Furthermore, gardening culture has always played a pedagogical role: educating young people in gardening aims not only to strengthen technical skills but also to raise awareness of nature, sustainability, and the value of work in the garden.
