Study day Tomi Mäkelä: «Mozart is the boy for you!» (Vertigo)
Alfred Hitchcock and Classical Music. Afternoon of German Studies
In Vertigo, Midge tells the depressed John, "Mozart is for you. The way to clear the cobwebs," which brings us right to the point, especially since an imaginary psychiatrist might have replied, "I don't think Mozart can help." Alfred Hitchcock created a language that still influences filmmaking today. He made Beethoven the composer of choice for psychopaths, had Melanie play Debussy's Arabesque on an upright piano during the bird attack on Bodega Bay, and counted on us finding Tristan and Isolde on Annie's and his own bookshelf in Strangers on a Train (complete with a double bass).
