A major figure in Italian cultural history, poet, polemicist, novelist, and filmmaker, Pasolini was also, though briefly, interested in theatre. In the 1960s, he developed a theoretical 'manifesto' for a new theatre and wrote a series of important tragedies embodying many themes found throughout his work. One of the most controversial topics, especially in works like "Affabulazione" and "Calderón", is the conflict between the generation of fathers and that of their children. Both are examined with lucidity and detachment, without claiming to offer a definitive solution. As Pasolini has the Shadow of Sophocles say in "Affabulazione", for every father, the son is not a riddle, but a mystery. This theme of father-son conflict, central in "Affabulazione" and "Calderón", as well as in Pasolini’s poetry and biography, is discussed by Raoul Precht in his recent essay.
