What’s in our water? Should I drink from the tap? Plastic bottles? Metal? Glass? Which chemicals are bad for me? Which ones are bad for the environment? What are “forever chemicals” and are they really around forever? These easy questions do not always have easy answers.

This talk will take the audience on a chemical detective story, showing how researchers try to answer these questions. Similar to criminal investigations, this process involves databases of chemical “fingerprints” (mass spectra) and lists of “suspects” without fingerprints. Efforts are made to predict how chemicals may transform in the environment, potentially becoming harder to find and perhaps more or less toxic after treatment. The presentation will include examples from Luxembourg and around the world, demonstrating how collaboration and resource sharing help researchers understand and protect drinking water quality.
