We sometimes hear the phrase: our politicians aren't up to the task. This is evident in the case of the environment, since our governments are doing little or nothing to stop this vicious cycle. But their responsibility, just like that of multinationals and the infamous 1%, is (almost) beyond question.
Yet other, more subtle causes contribute to the failure of political ecology: those rooted within its own ranks. Structurally, ecology, a product of environmentalism, has become a cause of the elites. From the 1970s onward, its activists, NGOs, and certain politicians transformed it into a struggle for the privileged, a fragmented, negotiable, and, above all, profitable issue. And in doing so, they reduced the struggle to a mere performance, an abstract morality, far removed from ordinary citizens.
At a time when the far right is organizing everywhere to impose its identity-based and security-focused slogans on the political agenda — at the expense of measures of general interest for climate and biodiversity — and when the anti-environmentalist discourse (green backlash) is being raised very high in the public sphere, it is time to counter-attack.
Far from simply acknowledging failure or assigning praise and blame to the environmental movement's actions over the past 50 years, Clément Sénéchal will propose solutions to break this deadlock. These solutions will necessarily involve a repoliticization of the environmental discourse, integrating the issue of addressing inequalities in both industrialized countries and those of the Global South.
