Pianist Francesca Han, double bassist Pierre Fenichel, and drummer Fred Pasqua bring together their unique worlds within WAKAN.
Being Dantès is the first fruit of this meeting: a repertoire of compositions that goes to the essentials, without embellishments, to convey direct and relentless emotions. Obvious and familiar melodies move through complex and unique structures, making for a demanding yet clear journey to multiple destinations.
Inspired by Alexandre Dumas, the program traces the transformation of Edmond Dantès at the Château d’If until his rebirth as the Count of Monte Cristo. Conceived as a series of tableaux, the pieces revisit key moments of this inner adventure: the tension of an imagination in motion within an immobile universe, the dilation of time, the faltering of reason. In this confinement, the silence and the faintest sounds gain new strength, like the ripples of waves or the footsteps of jailers, drawing a true sonic topography that replaces the alternation of days and nights, opening a deeply existential dimension.
WAKAN? In the culture of the Achuar people of the Amazon, as well as in other Amerindian cultures, WAKAN is a spiritual principle attributed to humans, plants, and objects alike, representing, mysteriously, both their soul and their energy.
