In 1971, under Portugal's dictatorship, three women defied censorship and repression by publishing "Novas cartas portuguesas," a feminist literary manifesto written by all three. Maria Velho da Costa, Maria Isabel Barreno, and Maria Teresa Horta—known as the "Three Maria"—stand for the right to self-determination. Their work, censored and prosecuted for offense to morals, sparked international support and was translated across Europe and the United States.
On the occasion of the publication of a new French translation, a meeting will bring together three experts to discuss the international wave of support and the feminist context in Europe and Luxembourg. Historical introduction by Renée Wagener.
