All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way — the famous opening line of Tolstoy's monumental novel Anna Karenina immediately strikes to the heart of the matter. Young mother Anna leads a seemingly carefree life in St. Petersburg with her husband. She seemingly has everything needed for happiness — yet she is not happy. When the charming Count Vronsky enters her life, in many ways the opposite of her husband, Anna falls into unconditional love. By openly choosing Vronsky, Anna soon sacrifices everything that once defined her life: her husband (who refuses to divorce), her son, and the respect of society. Yet even with Vronsky, Anna soon feels misunderstood. What began as the "Greatest Love of All" quickly becomes a spiraling descent into jealousy, hatred, and self-destruction. Anna ultimately approaches death with the same resolve with which she pursued love.
Alongside Anna, her husband, and her lover, Tolstoy presents a panorama of fascinating characters, each exploring the possible and impossible ways of loving and connecting as men and women. In a new stage adaptation, director Frank Hoffmann, with a remarkable ensemble, brings Tolstoy's 19th-century masterpiece to vivid life in a set designed by German painter Ben Willikens.
