Starting in 1681, the troops of Louis XIV blockaded the fortress of Luxembourg. At Christmas in 1683, the city was bombarded for several days. It is only at the end of April 1684 that Marshal Créqui's siege begins. After six weeks of intense fighting, the Spanish garrison is forced to surrender. Vauban learns from this siege and reinforces the fortress on the surrounding plateaus.
