The construction of Fort Thüngen dates back to 1732. In 1836 and again between 1859 and 1860, the fort was modernized and enlarged. Today, Fort Thüngen is the only detached fort still remaining on the territory of the former Luxembourg fortress. While part of the above-ground structures has been destroyed, almost all of the underground galleries remain intact.
