Nederlands Dans Theater: NDT 1
Figures in Extinction is the third and last work in the triptych of collaborations between NDT-associate choreographer Crystal Pite and award-winning Complicité theatre director Simon McBurney (last seen at the Théâtres de la Ville in 2023 with Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead). Part one, which won the 2022 Dutch Dance Award for most impressive dance production, tackled the climate crisis and the extinction of hundreds of species. Part two depicted humans alienated from themselves. In this third and final part, Pite and McBurney continue to explore the self-mixed, toxic cocktail that is our age, where we are both perpetrators and victims. McBurney's theatrical clarity combined with Pite's crisp movement language creates an empathic and breathtaking work of contemplation, where anxieties and aspirations surface, offering hope in the face of climate urgency.
