A Flatshare for Europe – "The Spanish Apartment" (2002) revisited
Course: A Flatshare for Europe – "The Spanish Apartment" (2002) revisited
In preparation for Europe Day 2026, the Zentrum fir politesch Bildung, the Institut Pierre Werner, and the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel are organizing a film screening with an introduction. "L’Auberge espagnole – Barcelona for One Year" by Cédric Klapisch, a cult film from the early 2000s, will be shown. In the context of an expanded Europe, it tells the story of young people from various EU countries in the Erasmus program in Barcelona. With humor and ease, the film does not showcase political institutions but instead highlights the impact of European mobility on identity, coexistence, and belonging, conveying a sense of diversity and European unity.
The participants will be introduced to film examples that address intolerance and nationalism as well as international understanding, cultural exchange, and Europe as a peace project. They will develop the ability to reflect on the "European spirit" and to analyze films both formally and content-wise. Additionally, they will engage with media literacy, democratic education, and European unification.
The program includes a 30-minute introduction that places the film in a historical context and presents further examples, the film screening (122 minutes), and a subsequent discussion. Methodologically, the event is based on a lecture (in German), film (original with subtitles), and collegial exchange.
