The different forms of suspense in comics

Sequential graphic artworks usually tell stories, often aiming to attract and keep their audience. In many popular comic genres, the aesthetics of creating suspense reflect this intention. However, a closer look reveals that the actual staging of suspense rarely matches the public appeal or even the offer to readers. This lecture explores the paradoxes of fiction and suspense through three key examples: the Franco-Belgian adventure comic in Ligne Claire style with Tintin, well-known examples from US superhero stories, and some comic memoirs.
