Conference: Memories from Difficult Times - A Priest in the Clutches of Nazi Justice
On August 30, 1943, Father Ferdinand Hertges, then 45 years old and the Sacred Heart priest of Luxembourg and bursar at the mission school of Clairefontaine, was arrested by the Gestapo. Shortly before, a Luxembourgish deserter whom the religious community had sheltered was shot during an attempted border crossing. The German military court in Arlon sentenced Father Hertges and the school’s rector, Father Nicolas Kayser, to one year in prison. His journey through the prisons of Arlon, Brussels, Beverloo, Aachen, and Hagen was recorded in eight notebooks of 'Memories.' Long forgotten, these writings bring a painful era back to life half a century after his death.
