My Island Heart - Cabaret
Texts and cabaret songs by Jewish authors and composers of the 1930s and 40s are woven together to form a moving fictional biography.
In My Island Heart, Jörg Maria Welke tells the story of a Jewish cabaret artist from Berlin. At the height of her career, she is abruptly torn from her life, arrested, deported to Auschwitz and murdered. Since then, her unredeemed soul has wandered restlessly in and between the camp's barracks. She finally finds peace through an encounter with personified fate, which gives her back her human body for one evening, takes her back to her apartment on the eve of her deportation and lets her cathartically review the most intense stages and moments of her private and artistic life.
Cheeky songs, loose tongues, violent death in Auschwitz: In “My Island Heart”, Jörg Maria Welke brings a Jewish cabaret artist to life. Recklinghäuser Zeitung
