Icons of alternative rock, the Smashing Pumpkins are recognized for their amalgam of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth, psychedelia and dream pop; A layered and powerful style carried by swirling and distorted guitars which shake under the anguished lyrics of singer/songwriter Billy Corgan. One of the most visible bands of the '90s, alongside grunge bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins enjoyed mainstream success during the decade with the classic releases Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness . After a foray into electronic rock on Adore, Corgan released A last pair of efforts before putting the band to rest for a long hiatus in the early 2000s that ended with Zeitgeist in 2007. Alongside a constantly evolving lineup , he continued to record as The Pumpkins before reuniting most of the original lineup for a 2018 reunion tour and albums such as 2020's synth-heavy Cyr and Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Proceedings of 2023.
