Actart Concert: The History of Tango
“The History of Tango” is a cult work by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola (1921-1992), initially composed for flute and guitar, arranged in this concert for flute and piano, recounting the history of tango in four paintings from 1910 to 1945. The concert will offer you a journey across continents and eras, presenting various tangos, of popular inspiration or more complex, of varied characters and tempi, however all linked by the haunting rhythm of “habanera”. The voluptuous sounds of the flute, the expressiveness of the violin and the rhythmic impulse rendered by the percussion of the piano are perfectly suited to this repertoire, also intended to be danced. Even if the trio for flute, violin and piano by the Italian composer Nino Rota (1911-1979) – one of the only works written specifically for this group – seems to stand alone in this program, we find there, as in the tangos of Astor Piazzola , this rhythmic obsession imposed by the piano in the first and third movements, and a romantic breathing melody in the slow central movement.
