By Antonio Soler (1729-1783), a Catalan composer-priest who was a student of Domenico Scarlatti, we know the sonatas for harpsichord (more than 140!), minus the six Quintets for harpsichord and string quartet (1776). Their role in The Birth of Classical Chamber Music is nevertheless crucial: forgetting the baroque continuo, the keyboard performs in equal measure with the strings. Harpsichordist Anne-Catherine Bucher joins the Gara String Quartet, a young Spanish ensemble passionate about this original repertoire, to serve all of its voluble grace.
