Formidable Women - Piano Quartet
Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, Piano Quartet in A flat majorDora Pejacevic, Piano Quartet in D minor op. 25Mel Bonis, Piano Quartet in B flat major op. 69The Fauré Quartett has established itself as one of the most brilliant piano quartets since its founding in 1995 in Karlsruhe, Germany. Recognized for its unique profile and its multiple facets, the ensemble explores new sound fields in the field of chamber music. His repertoire, which goes off the beaten track, testifies to his visionary approach and his taste for discoveries and experiments. At CAPE, the Quartet presents a program composed solely by “terrific women”. The obstacles that these female composers had to face throughout their lives are reflected in words and quotations that require no further comment. For example, Camille Saint-Saëns exclaimed after hearing The Music of Mel Bonis: “I would never have believed that a woman was capable of writing that. She knows all the tricks of the trade.” Abraham Mendelssohn, father of Fanny and Felix, wrote to his daughter: “Music will perhaps become a profession for him [Felix], while it cannot and must always be for you only an ornament, never The bass fundamental to your being and your action. Fortunately, these three female composers did not let themselves be discouraged by such remarks: their piano quartets prove that their music is much more than a simple “ornament” or a copy of the works of their male contemporaries.
