Since its inception, cinema has grappled with the issue of how to portray onscreen landscapes and worlds that do not or no longer exist in reality—whether prehistoric, fantastical, or mythological worlds, or alien planets and extraterrestrial ecosystems. This lecture explores how cinema has overcome these narrative challenges and the sources of inspiration for fantasy and science fiction cinema.
