Many operas, instrumental or vocal pieces are based on myths of Antiquity. Baroque France is no exception to the rule, quite the contrary: composers of the Court of Versailles bring these legendary characters back to life. The diversity and depth of these heroes' and heroines' psychological profiles and the internal conflicts they face are captivating themes for high society salons. The exceptional destinies of the characters provide composers with the perfect ingredients to vary their palette of emotion and expression: love, anger, tenderness, despair... As a more intimate counterpart of lyrical tragedy, the cantata focuses on a single destiny or mythological episode. In 1708, composer André Campra published the cantata "Arion" for soprano, German flute, and basso continuo, portraying the semi-historical semi-legendary character, Greek poet and musician. In his cantata "Ariane et Bacchus" published in 1728, Montéclair, one of the genre's masters, depicts Ariane as offended, desperate, and eventually consoled by a new love. Far from limiting itself to vocal music, the program also pays tribute to the instrumental music of great masters of the time composed under the inspiration of myth, notably the famous François Couperin... Guaranteed passion and emotions!
