At the intersection of musical comedy, American popular music, and jazz, George Gerschwin (1898-1937), followed by Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), charmed us with their catchy melodies and syncopated, dancing rhythms. "I got rhythm" is a quintessential example of such melodies – written by Gerschwin in 1930 for the musical comedy Girl Crazy – it has become a well-known jazz standard and inspired Bernstein in the composition of his West Side Story dances. Likewise, Robert Muczinski (1929-2010) successfully blended the frenzied jazz rhythms with the obsessive and sacred nature of Stravinski and Bartók's compositions in his highly virtuosic sonata for flute and piano.

Contemporary composer Michael Publig (born in 1961) echoes Gerschwin's famous Rhapsody in blue with his Rhapsody on a blue flute, utilizing a more modern language and incorporating improvised passages.

Performance by Jans Carlo on flute, Stephany Ortega on vocals, and Katrin Reifenrath on piano.
