Cracks of Potential by Franco-British artist Victor Guerin is a series of evocative sculptural installations that delve into the interplay between urban decay and natural resilience. Using fragmented industrial materials like asphalt and concrete as its foundation, the project transforms these symbols of human development into fertile grounds for germinating seeds. The work captures the tension between destruction and creation, drawing attention to nature’s ability to thrive in even the most inhospitable environments.

The centrepiece of the installation is a dynamic floor composition of cracked surfaces of bitumen, where delicate shoots emerge from the fractures, juxtaposing the fragility of life with the weight of urban debris. Other sculptures further explore the broader ecological and philosophical themes of regeneration.

By sourcing materials from a building site at neimënster and a local bitumen recycling centre, Cracks of Potential critiques urbanization’s impact on biodiversity and highlights the potential for renewal. The work invites viewers to reflect on the resilience of nature and humanity’s relationship with the ecosystems we inhabit, resonating deeply with the themes of the Graine exhibition.

Cracks of Potential is one of three projects that were selected in response to the open call Art That Grows. The three multimedia installations represent different perspectives on the theme of the seed, from personal, interactive, hopeful, and emotional to industrial and scientific. Though each artist’s approach to the topic holds a unique quality they all play on our interaction with nature and mirror our flawed relationship. As such, the artistic projects aim to widen the interpretational scope of “Graines” without taking away from its informative, educational, and deeply aesthetic impact.
