Through its rhetorical and expressive qualities, the voice was the model for music, and the literary text was the support for the development of musical language. Instruments would only definitively free themselves from this hierarchy much later. A secular genre emblematic of the entire 17th century in France, the air de cour, combining poetry and music, illustrates the growing refinement of salons and high society.
