William Christie & Les Arts Florissants
Les Arts Florissants, from which the renowned baroque ensemble derives its poetic name, refer to the title of a work by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, which you can discover during this concert. Composed at the zenith of the Sun King's reign, this joyful and light opera is conceived as a musical idyll. In the second part, another love story will be sung, but this time in a tragic vein. In "La Descente d'Orphée aux Enfers", Charpentier revisits a Greek mythological episode where a poet with a broken heart attempts to challenge the gods of death to reclaim his deceased fiancée.
