These sonatas were not only written but given as gifts. Composed out of love, friendship, or a pure thirst for virtuosity, César Franck's sonata was a wedding gift, performed while the ink was still wet. The 'Kreutzer' by Ludwig van Beethoven, dedicated to a violinist he admired, even though the sentiments were not reciprocal. As for Robert Schumann's, it was offered as a token of friendship and trust. Passionate, intimate, electrifying, this music is meant to be shared.
