One of the most famous requiems alongside Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's, Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem has an interesting origin. Upon the death of Gioacchino Rossini in 1868, Verdi proposed a collaboration among Italian composers to write a requiem in his honor. Verdi wrote the last part, 'Libera me,' but unfortunately, the performance was canceled. Five years later, upon the death of Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi decided to reuse his 'Libera me' and composed the Requiem in memory of this artist he admired throughout his adult life.
