Old Movies and Jazz: Man with a Movie Camera
We invite you to a unique event—a screening of silent cinema accompanied by live jazz music!
“Man with a Movie Camera” (Ukrainian: Людина з кіноапаратом) is an experimental 1929 Soviet silent documentary film, directed by Dziga Vertov at the request of the Ukrainian Photo Cinema State Studio.
It showcases Soviet urban life in the late 1920s without actors. From dawn to dusk, Soviet citizens are shown at work, at play, and interacting with the machines of modern life. The film features cameramen, an editor, and the modern Soviet Union they document.
Renowned for its experimental cinematic techniques developed in Ukraine, Vitaliy Tkachuk composed music for the film's soundtrack in 2010, inspired by Odessa’s cultural history.
Musicians:
- Vitaliy Tkachuk, guitar
- Gilles Wagner, drums and percussion
- Laurent Payfert, double bass
- Alessandro Biasi, jazz saxophonist
This concert is part of UA Days 2025—a cultural festival honoring Ukraine's strength, beauty, and creativity through music, art, and community.
